My old cell phone was occasionally having problems and was causing me some frustration. We had an available upgrade so that I could cheaply pick up a new phone. So I went and checked into it and ended up with a smart phone....so I have discovered the world of apps.
So far all of the apps I have have been free. I'm happy to have finally linked my Google Calendar, and to have my Remember the Milk to-do-list a bit more accessible. Perhaps I can make a dent in my email with gmail mail easily coming to my phone. Fortunately for me the two places I spend the most time (home and campus) have Wi-fi so that I am not really concerned about going over my data allotment.
The kids are excited about mommy's phone having cooler games than it had before.
The funniest thing that the kids seem to like is an app called "WS Violin." I had to explain it to them...you remember when someone would whine and you would rub your thumb and pointer finger together and tell the person that it was the world's smallest violin playing just for them...well they have an app for that.

Welcome to the apps world. John sent me down this path last year, and I have to say I mostly play games, when I can, on my phone! Email is nice and you might check out Evernote. It's free, but you have to sign up as it links to your computers if you download it there, and your phone. If you've used Onenote it's a simplier version of that.
If you want a time sync, Angry Birds is totally worth the 99 cents, but be warned it is a time sync!
My kids are totally into the app games, especially William. I have to admit it makes waiting in places like restaurants much easier, although I will also admit to being annoyed to look up and find everyone plugged in (they all have their own iPod touches now, through the magic of hand-me-downs).
A really cool and very different one is Osmos. Costs a few dollars but is really different and cool. Can't explain. Check it out.
We have Wolf toss...it is the "I don't want to pay for an app version of Angry Birds." I just added a grocery list app...
